CHAPTER ELEVEN
Nick sat on the end of Stella’s bed, watching with interest as she fiddled with her astro software. ‘Okay, what is it this time?’ He’d come in to drink a cup of cocoa with her, as it was gone midnight and he couldn’t sleep. ‘More of your crazy clients, like that bloke who was yelling at you the other day?’
‘This is the same crazy client, actually.’ Having changed a few of the display parameters, she brought up Anthony’s chart again and studied it against current planetary activity. ‘He’s gone missing; I think he may be in trouble.’
‘I’m sorry to hear that. I take it there’s something you hope to do about it?’
Stella made a few notes, comparing the two charts. ‘I’m going to try the same trick I pulled when my dad went missing. Do you remember?’
‘You ran a horary chart. To find out where …’ Nick grimaced, stopping just in time.
‘Where his remains were buried,’ she finished for him, and had to pause, struggling to deal with the upswell of emotion that had accompanied her words.
She really shouldn’t keep getting upset. That was in the past now, and she and Dad had been at daggers drawn for years. Though the barbaric things that had been done to his body after death … No, it was too horrific to remember.
‘What an impressive memory,’ Stella added, smiling at him with difficulty. ‘Yes, that’s the one. A horary chart. Drawn up to answer one specific question.’
‘Which, in this case, would be … Where is my crazy client?’
‘Anthony’s not crazy. Just unhappy and on edge.’ She turned back to her laptop. ‘He’s afraid because he thinks somebody’s stalking him. And he lives alone, unlike us, so there’s no support network for him. Nobody he can talk to in the wee small hours when it’s dark and spooky, and every sound in the house is amplified. And he’s missing his mum, who passed away last year.’ She cleared away the other charts from the screen and sat a moment in thought, taking a deep breath. ‘I need to know where he is. At least an inkling. Or a place to start looking.’
‘Is somebody stalking him? Or was he imagining it?’
‘I don’t know. But that’s not the question I’m asking right now.
‘Sorry, I’ll be quiet now,’ he said, then added in a whisper, ‘Don’t forget your cocoa.’
‘I won’t, and thanks for making it.’
Stella tried to clear her mind, just as she had cleared away the other chart. She thought about Anthony Archer, and his distress the last time she’d seen him. And the messages and voice mail she’d sent that had gone unanswered. She imagined him loading up his car, as the neighbour had described, and driving away.
Then she clicked the chart button for current transits at her location, which instantly created the chart she would use to answer the big question pressing on her mind, where was Anthony Archer?
‘When trying to locate a lost or missing item,’ she muttered, ‘you would normally look in the second house.
